School is compulsory from age 6 to 16. Preschool from 3 to 6 (Infantil) is free in public schools but not compulsory.
First register at the town hall (empadronamiento). The registration certificate is needed for school and for the doctor.
The main admission round for public schools is once a year, in spring, for the next school year. A child arriving during the year can also be admitted: contact the chosen school or the Consejería de Educación.

After registering, apply for a health card (tarjeta sanitaria) at your nearest centro de salud. Your child will get a family paediatrician there.

Diagnosis and support in public school go through the paediatrician and the school guidance team (EOEP). Ask the school for a meeting right after enrolment.
