Spanish Supreme Court annuls VTC vehicle limit in Gran Canaria for 200 new Uber and Cabify licences
The Spanish Supreme Court has annulled the vehicle limit for VTC services in Gran Canaria. This decision opens the way for the issuance of 200 new licences for Uber and Cabify.

The Supreme Court (Tribunal Supremo) ruled that the vehicle limit for application-based transport (VTC) on Gran Canaria is unlawful. The judgment invalidates restrictions imposed by the island authorities (Cabildo de Gran Canaria) and the regional taxi federation (FEDETAX).
The ruling allows for 200 new licences for Uber and Cabify on the island. There are 4500 pending applications for new licences on the island. The court found that the region's specific characteristics did not justify the restrictive rule of one VTC licence for every 30 taxi licences. This rule was considered a barrier to freedom of establishment in the EU.
