Protests in Las Palmas: Organisers demand rent control zones
A protest camp is underway in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with approximately 50 people. Organisers are demanding that the Government of the Canary Islands introduce rent control zones (zona de mercado residencial tensionado).

The organisation Derecho al Techo and other activists are calling for the immediate implementation of the national housing law. They argue against relying solely on new government measures. The claim also concerns the verification of evictions from 1 October 2026 onwards under new regulations. Designating a 'tensionado' zone allows for limiting rent increases on new contracts. It also aims to increase the availability of affordable housing. There are currently no formally designated zones of this type on the islands. Municipalities, including Las Palmas, have applied for them. The protest continues in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Organisers plan to continue the action before the parliamentary debate. The Government of the Canary Islands must still determine the details of rent control.
